Grand Bahama Music Lover’s Vacation
Grand Bahama island is a music lover’s vacation spot. For many
the thought of taking a Grand Bahama vacation is limited to the
beaches and the native delicacies, but there is an exclusive group of
vacationers who have discovered that without the inclusion of the
Bahamian rythyms your vacation is incomplete. The heart and soul
of the natives of this island paradise is found in its music - the
‘Grand Bahama Sounds’ we call it.
Throughout history this island has echoed the sounds of its inhabitants,
the rythyms of their souls that move in time with the methodical rythyms
of nature. A melting pot of cultures and peoples from distant land, that
over time have developed a sound that is distinct and individual - the Bahamian
rythym. From the thumping drums of Africa which tell the tales of
times past and present occurances to the classical dances of Europe like
the quadrille. A splash of Irish and Scottish tunes to the down south
Soca and Reggea beat. This infusion of the Art of sounds and rythyms speak
of the genious and creativity of the Bahamian people.
Musical talent abounds throughout the island with many self taught musicians
mastering the skills of an instrument they happened upon. And when accessibility
was not possible the passion to express those songs within their soul and spirit
birthed a creativity that turned the utensils of labour into instruments of
delight. Bahamian musical history will recall the use of washtubs, scrubbing
(wash)boards, wood saws, table knives, storage barrels (goatskin drums)and many
more household items transformed into musical instruments that created a sound
unique to these shores - a Grand Bahama Sound and more over a Bahamian Sound.
Today the music of the Bahamas is still alive and to the vacationing tourist
taking a Grand Bahama tour that allows you to interact with the natives will land
you right in the midst of Bahamian rythym or a Grand Bahama sound experience.
So kick back relax, take off your shoes and dance until your heart is light and
your spirit free on your Grand Bahama Vacation.
